San Remo the Town of Flowers When you reach San Remo, you are met by a marvellous scenery: mountains on the background; hills sloping down to the sea; a lovely town in the centre of an inlet; wonderful flowers; and tropical vegetation - palm trees, cactuses, and flowers.
Here you are in the Town of Flowers where elegant and long-stemmed roses, sweet-smelling carnations, and colourful begonias and camellias are cultivated. Along San Remo hills, you can see large greenhouses and water tanks used for watering. The heart of flower growing is right here.
The great skill of the hybridists, the masterly care of flower growers, and the exceptional climate of this area contribute to the cultivation of the world-wide famous and beautiful flowers of San Remo.
Sanremo Location
Sanremo is on the Italian Riviera between Genoa and the French border in the part known as the Riviera dei Fiori, or riviera of flowers. It's in the province of Liguria - see Liguria Map for location.
Sanremo Transportation
Sanremo can be reached by train or bus from other towns along the coast. Its on the coastal rail line that connects France with Genoa and other points along Italy's west coast. The train station is in town, above the harbor and the bus station is near the center of town. By car, it's about 5 km off the A10 autostrada (toll road) that runs along the coast. Car rentals are available in Sanremo from Auto Europe (book direct).
The closest airports are Nice, France, about 65 km away and Genoa airport (see Italy airports map), about 150km away.
Sanremo Festivals and Events
Sanremo is famous for its Italian Song Festival held in late February. There's also a European music festival in June, Rock festival in July, and Jazz in August. Shows and concerts are held throughout summer. From October through May, the Opera Theater at the Casino holds performances by the Symphonic Orchestra. New Year's Eve is celebrated with music and a big fireworks display by the sea at Porto Vecchio, the old port. The Sanremo Flowers parade is held at the end of January. Many sports events, including water sports, are held throughout the year, too.
When to Visit Sanremo
Sanremo is a good year-round destination. The Riviera dei Fiori has milder temperatures than many places in Italy and since it's a fairly large town, most hotels and restaurants stay open even in winter. Summer can be very crowded and hotel prices may be higher than the rest of the year.
