Florence city of the Renaissance. Home of art masterpieces, architectural icons, exquisite food and some of the best shopping in Europe.
It’s captivating but also pretty intimidating when it comes to planning a trip.
There’s so much to see in Florence your head will spin. Our advice? You need to do a tour. It’ll take you past the main sights. Give you a sense of where everything is. And most importantly it’ll put all that history in perspective.
A good walking tour like this one, will have an engaging professional guide who’ll bring the Renaissance to life as you are walking the streets of this city which is basically a huge open air museum.

Florence offers a variety of tourist attractions, but it doesn’t mean that you cannot be disappointed. Many people are upset about the number of tourists vs locals, as the place remains busy all year long.
The place is always filled with foreigners, either short-term visitors or exchange students.
A few years ago I was actually a student in Florence as well, which allowed me to get to know the city well enough to introduce you to some hidden gems and show you how to avoid mistakes. Here are some tips for visiting Florence for first-time visitors....
Florence is Best Explored on Foot
The historic center of Florence is pretty compact, so everything can be reached in 20 minutes or less.
During all the time I spent in Florence when I lived there and revisited, I can’t think of a single time when I had to use a bus unless I was heading outside of the city.
The only exception would be a visit to Piazzale Michelangelo for that postcard view of the city, but the way up is really not as bad as some people make it sound. It usually takes me about 15 minutes from the Duomo.
If Coming by Train (or Taking a Trip to Pisa): Validate your Train Ticket
Trains in Italy work well and purchasing tickets is relatively easy. You can use the self-service ticket sales kiosks in Florence train station or pre-book them online on Trenitalia.
Florence Isn’t Expensive
Many visitors are afraid of visiting Florence because they expect high prices. While the accommodation prices aren’t the lowest, food can surely be affordable if you avoid typical tourist traps such as eating next to Piazza del Duomo or Ponte Vecchio.

Apart from the must-visit Monuments and Museums that include the Duomo, the Battisterio, the Uffizzi , Accademia, the market at San Lorenzo and several historic churches.

Be prepared to walk the city centre and enjoy the beauty of this ancient and exciting place. The sunset with Ponte Vecchio on the frame is also a must.
Please do not miss to taste the focaccia with Lampredotto and ice creams.
They are everywhere and are absolutely fabulous.
You can diet when you go back home.

The most-visited art museum in Italy, Florence’s Uffizi Gallery
Home to some of the most famous masterpieces from the Italian Renaissance, among them, Botticelli’s iconic Birth of Venus painting. Formerly the private collection of Francesco de’Medici, it deserves a sliver of your Italy budget and a spot on your Florence itinerary.
